What types of boundaries are there, where are they located, and most importantly, what type of boundaries does the North American Plate have. These plates constantly slide past each other over the years. There are 3 main plate boundaries that we all need to know. They converge, diverge and transform. They all have different names even though they are all linked to borders. This is because they all move the crust in different ways. Whether it's a few tenths of a degree or several degrees, the plates are always moving. Sometimes when these plates collide, things like volcanoes can form. Boundaries can form features such as: folded mountain ranges, volcanoes, earthquakes, trenches, mid-ocean ridges and rift valleys. Convergent boundaries occur when plates collide with each other. Divergent boundaries occur when plates move away from each other. And finally, transformation boundaries occur when plates slide sideways past each other. For some examples: Southern California sits on the boundary of the North American plate and the Pacific plate, making it an easy fault zone. This is why Southern California experiences so many earthquakes. This is because they are on the verge of a transformation. Another example is that a divergent boundary in Iceland between the North American Plate and the Eurasian Plate causes Iceland to be divided along a middle ocean.
