Essay / The Power of Power in 'Battle Royal' - 721
In Battle Royal, it is clear that power was not necessarily shared. There is usually a leadership group and everyone reports to them. Southern literature shows the demands in a distinct way. Status depends on skin color and gender. The rich white men in Battle Royal run the show, while the black men and white girl are there to entertain themselves, thus explaining where power can be centralized. Gender is not the primary concern of Southern literature. Yet little power is given to women. The only white woman in Battle Royal is there for the pleasure of men. Its presence is limited, thus representing its lack of importance. "I saw the terror and disgust in his eyes, almost like my own terror and that authority can even reflect the amount of wealth a person possesses." I shook with excitement, forgetting my pain . I'd have the gold and the bills, I thought." The narrator simply fought for a speech and a chance at money. "The carpet was electrified... But I saw that didn't stop the other boys... I quickly crawled across the floor, picking up the pieces... Ignoring the shock as I laughed..." In the end, his reward was a scholarship and a little money he had to catch on the electric floor He didn't get his money by winning the fight where the prize was $10. He tried to bribe his opponent. got knocked out, you can have the prize... I'll get five dollars more... Seven? " "Some would have assumed that the adversary would accept the bribe. Maybe he didn't do it because of the uncertainty. Money is not as important to the narrator. “I wanted to give my speech and he came at me like he wanted to beat him.” Even though money wasn't his motivation, he still had to participate. Other black men were fighting over money, so being an obstacle to power is determined even before birth. When written from the perspective of a person of color, it shows the struggle the characters go through. When written from the perspective of a white character, issues can be resolved through personal development. Some issues may include religion, hypocrisy and education. This shows that racial problems are far away. Southern literature shows how unfair life can be for people of color. They had to fight, sometimes literally, for things that could easily be handed over to white men. a person of color can live an invisible life despite their personal characteristics.
