Essay / Understanding Hinduism: Holi - 1777
Religion is not as important in today's world as it was a few hundred years ago. In the United States, the main religion is Christianity and no one pays much attention to other religions like Hinduism. The strange thing is that Hinduism existed in the world long before Christianity, and yet few people know about it. As we saw earlier, the teaching of religion “lacked sophistication compared to lessons on Christianity” (Glod). Some people are raised to believe that Christians are “perfect” with disdain for other religions, but everyone is perfect in their own way. Like anything else, Hinduism has its own stereotypes. These stereotypes are often misleading or completely different from their beliefs. Even though Hinduism is a unique and different culture, it still has similarities with Christianity. Whenever anyone hears about Hindus, the first thing they think of is cows or some sort of other ridiculous thing, but no one really knows what they actually believe. I asked a few Christians what they thought when they first heard about Hindus and many others. they had little or no idea what they actually believed, and they mentioned many common stereotypes. One person brought up the idea that Hindus worship a cow. They insisted that there is a rule in India that favors the cow. As one of them said: "I believe in India you could go to jail if you don't bow down to a cow when it passes and cows walk wherever they want." » This stereotype leads people to think that they are also vegetarians. “It makes sense to me that they are vegetarians given that they love cows. If you get in trouble for not bowing down to a cow, imagine if it ate one. Although it is a stereotype, it has some truth...in the middle of the document...they don't teach it in depth. Especially since in recent years, Hinduism has spread more widely in the United States. Works Cited Arshod, Laiba. Personal interview. March 14, 2014.
