Community policing emphasizes full cooperation between members of the police force and the community. This requires that all members of the police force, including civilian officers and sworn personnel, understand that the focus is on solving community problems and, in doing so, can challenge everyday policing norms. Officers have the responsibility to bring together both government and private resources in order to achieve positive results. They are often encouraged to devote significant time and energy to developing and preserving one-on-one interactions with residents, businesses, schools and community organizations. Community policing allows officers to be actively involved on the streets alongside the community. Their goal is not only to solve crimes, but also to interact with and establish a relationship with people in their neighborhood. This initiative has grown in popularity in recent years as police and community leaders look for greater ways to promote public safety and enrich the quality of life of their community members. Police and citizens often come into contact with each other for a multitude of reasons other than criminal. Police officers often engage in community service by providing an abundance of information to those who need it, and they provide educational services in schools and outreach services.
