Creationism and Evolution Taught in SchoolsIntroduction: Education about evolution and creationism in the public school system has been questionable. Charles Darwin published his findings on evolution in 1859. This profoundly changed science education in the public school system (Armenta, 1). Several lawsuits have been filed against the teaching of evolution. Due to conservative religious legislators, the teaching of evolution was banned and equal treatment of evolution and creationism or intelligent design (Armenta, 1). The court case that caused controversy was the 1925 Scope case in Dayton, Tennessee. Several major court cases followed; Epperson et al. v. Arkansas, McLean v. Arkansas Board of Education, Edwards v. Aguillard, and Frailer v. Tangipahoa Parish Board of Education (Armenta, 1). In Louisiana and Tennessee, a bill was approved allowing teachers in the public school system to teach evolution alongside creationism, even if the principal and superintendent disagree. The author of the bill believes that it will help students improve their critical thinking skills and that they will learn to be respectful of other students' beliefs (Jones, 1). Evolution has always been controversial to teach in public school systems, while creationism is too expensive to teach. Indeed, Texas is the largest producer of textbooks in the country (Jones, 2). This means that everything written in textbooks in the public school system will be approved by the Texas centralized school board. A textbook is essentially a program for teachers to describe their lessons.
