Essay / The Great Wall of China - 515
The Great Wall of ChinaThe Great Wall of China is one of the most famous monuments in China and is the most visited. Most people when visiting like to start with Beijing, which is in the northeast of China. True, the Great Wall did not appear out of nowhere, it took a lot of time and hard work on the part of soldiers, prisoners and some locals to build such a massive wall. The Great Wall is said to have begun approximately in the Warring States periods (476 BC-221 BC). It was built to form a sort of defensive wall intended to protect the population from invasion and possible enemies that might arise. Soon after, other states of the periods built walls on this part to protect themselves as well. Emperor Qin Shihuang of the Qin Dynasty unified the 6 states that existed at the time and ordered the rest of the existing walls to be connected. Thus the Great Wall of China was finally formed. Additionally, technically, the wall only became “great” during the Qin dynasty. There were mainly three groups of people who built the walls: prisoners, ordinary people and soldiers. Many people suffered greatly to build this great wall and some even died due to the heavy workload. We do not know the exact number of people who died. During other dynasties, the wall was repaired and modified and even enlarged in certain parts. Legend has it that the Great Wall could be seen from the moon, but this belief was proven false as astronauts Neil Armstrong, Jim Lovell and Jim Irwin stated that the wall could only be seen from Earth's orbit, not from the moon. The Great Wall shows the hard work, determination and dedication that people put into building this wall. It shows agricultural civilizations, a powerful army, and others who devoted their time to building this wall. The Wall is very important to China because it shows the history of leaders who wanted to protect themselves from invaders and potential enemies, as well as their strategic thinking. The wall served as a defense and safeguard of national security for the people and the country. More recently, the Great Wall is now a historic monument and national symbol for the country of China. If you want to visit the Great Wall, it costs around $80.00. If you wanted to be a VIP, which means having your own tour guide, this is $189.
