Shintoism began in 550 AD. This is an ancient Japanese tradition. Shintoism has no true founder like the Buddha, Jesus or Mohammed. Furthermore, it does not contain any sacred text that it refers to. Shintoism was not recognized as a religion until the 12th century. It started more as a philosophy. (World Religions Online) Shinto literally means "the way of the Kami" (student resources in context) or "the way of the gods." They believe that all natural things have their own spirituality. They also believe that spiritual powers exist in the natural world. Kami can be found in many natural places, for example in animals, mountains, plants, etc. (URI Kids) Although you can practice Shintoism, it is not considered evangelical. The Japanese used Shinto to bring the nation together and help gain support for their emperor. Shintoism has created many themes for the Japanese people to follow, such as creating harmony among the Kami, maintaining strong relationships with family, love and respect for natural artifacts and processes.
