  • Essay / Harmful effects of smoking - 1910

Every year, thousands of people die from lung cancer or other tobacco-related illnesses. Everyone in the world comes into contact with cigarette smoke at least once in their life, whether in a restaurant or at work. Millions of people are addicted to tobacco, and thousands more become addicted every year. Cigarettes and other tobacco products are everywhere. Most addicted smokers started when they were young (Roberts 18). The reason why people become addicted to any type of tobacco product is that all tobacco products contain nicotine, which is the addictive ingredient (American Thoracic Society 22). Every time a person smokes a cigarette or chews tobacco, they ingest nicotine. I believe tobacco companies should be held accountable for every tobacco-related death every year. On the other hand, some people believe that everyone has the right to make their own judgment about their life. My opponent, Rosalind Marimont, argues that drugs and alcohol are more dangerous to society than tobacco (26). Passive smoking does not present a danger to the health of the community (Marimont 26). There are health benefits for people who smoke tobacco (Marimont 27). So many people quit smoking every year, it's so ridiculous to think that tobacco products are addictive, says Richard DeGrandpre(39). The facts about tobacco and tobacco products have been shaded by government and government agencies in order to make smoking less acceptable and more inconvenient for smokers and tobacco users, Sullum claims (55). My opponents firmly believe that there is no risk if a person starts smoking. As you will see, I will show mitigating facts that refute my opponent's views on tobacco products. My opponent states that smoking is not dangerous, however, I intend to prove that smoking is dangerous not only for smokers, but also for everyone. Smoking is proven to cause lung cancer and heart disease (American Thoracic Society19). Anyone who breathes the smoke from tobacco products is at risk of tobacco-related illnesses. Even though smoking doesn't get as much publicity as illegal drugs, cigarettes are just as bad. Smoking cigarettes leads to the use of other drugs that are more harmful to the person than cigarettes (Hall 22). If smoking wasn't... middle of paper ... number of teenagers who start smoking each year. Study after study has proven that smoking causes major health risks. Even people who do not smoke are at risk of suffering from these health problems. The statistics don't lie, a thousand people die every day from tobacco or tobacco-related diseases. The statistical data cannot be modified or shaded by anyone in any way. Tobacco products are not going away for good, but the Food and Drug Administration should have the power to regulate tobacco company advertising. The only product that the Food and Drug Administration cannot regulate is the manufacturing, sale, packaging, and distribution of tobacco products (Douglas 33). If ads can be reduced, many teens won't be as enticed to try them as they are now. Given this trade-off, tobacco companies will continue to receive money from people already addicted, but it will significantly reduce the amount of money they make each year. Tobacco products will always exist, but I hope that the Food and Drug Administration will be able to regulate them for the safety of not only..
