Essay / Perception of environmental risks: decrease in the hole in the ozone layer
Perception of environmental risksDecrease in the hole in the ozone layerThis article indicates that the hole in the ozone layer is decreasing. The credit for this good news lies in the phasing out of ozone-depleting chemicals, sponsored by the Montreal Protocol (Ozone Hole Dimining, November). According to this article, the hole reached a maximum of 25 million square kilometers, up from 28 in previous years between 1998 and 2006. The article highlights the fact that ozone-depleting gases are still in use. The article goes on to state that, according to the World Meteorological Organization, the planet will return to pre-ozone hole conditions between 2060 and 2075 (ozone hole diminishes, November). Chemists are poking holes in the ozone theory. The article claims that the experimental data has the potential to “shatter” the current belief system regarding ozone depletion (Schiermeier, 2007). The upheaval may extend to how scientists, and ultimately laypeople, understand the formation of the ozone hole and its connection to climate change. The Montreal Protocol was a major force in dealing with this hole, but the effects of these years of free use of CFCs will still linger in the atmosphere for decades (Schiermeier, 2007). The interaction of CFCs and the sun's rays is complex, but chemists at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif., are using the new measurements to cast doubt on gaps in the understanding of holes in the ozone layer. After experiments with a new photolysis rate applied to a chemical model of ozone depletion, they found that 60 percent of ozone destruction at the poles was due to something other than CFCs. The new discovery is being tested by other researchers, but the possibility of the idea has lasted so long that...... middle of article......, that fear increases the perception of risk and that anger reduces it (p. 21). Fear has kept us in the dark about the most important problems facing our planet. Fear has kept us in suspense for far too long. Now I hope that the anger over the emergence of the truth about the ozone layer and global warming will not only inspire our species to reduce the perception of risk by getting angry at the lies, but also to s 'ensure that those causing this unnecessary fear are held accountable. .Works citedSteg, L., Van Den Berg, AE and De Groot, JM (2013).
