Essay / President Kennedy and Affirmative Action - 1491
It is an undeniable fact that many groups around the world are disadvantaged. Throughout history, injustice has been widespread in the forms of slavery, discrimination, war and conquest. Unfortunately, remedying these problems in the modern era is no easy task. Although in American society today we have abolished slavery, given all races and genders the opportunity to vote, and eliminated restrictions on who can receive an education, it is extremely difficult for some generations to emerge from the abyss of injustice. As a result of this historical discrimination, many human beings find themselves in an economically disadvantaged situation. At the same time; however, there are many economically disadvantaged states whose ancestors were never discriminated against, as well as wealthy families whose ancestors were. Affirmative action, also known as affirmative action, was part of an executive order signed by President Kennedy in the 1960s as a solution to problems faced only by the first group. Ultimately, affirmative action is an injustice in itself that causes more problems than it hinders. In my essay, I plan to deconstruct three common arguments in favor of affirmative action while providing two valid arguments against it. Affirmative action is meant to discriminate positively rather than negatively, but it is possible to create a system without any discrimination. The first common argument in favor of affirmative action is that states require reparations for those who have suffered the negative consequences of past discrimination. and injustice. According to this argument, those who belong to a disadvantaged group who have been affected by discrimination in the past deserve reparations middle of paper......for a white man who needs help right now. would be denied this position or this award, simply because of their racial origin. In this way, affirmative action creates some of the same discrimination it seeks to reduce. Overall, I argue that affirmative action policies cause far more harm than they hinder. These policies are completely arbitrary, lack common reason, and create discrimination while trying to eliminate it. They further encourage mediocrity while attempting to reward less competent individuals at the expense of more competent ones. The diversity that affirmative action policies attempt to promote could easily arise naturally, but instead it is forced where it does not need to be. If Western society is to have any hope of eradicating discrimination, it does not need to be encouraged in any form, even in a positive way...
