  • Essay / Happiness: A Personal Essay: The Definition of Happiness

Growing up, parents taught their children that achieving certain milestones in life, such as getting A's in school, being accepted into an Ivy college League, having a respected career, having a reliable income, living in a two-story house, marrying the love of your life, having well-adjusted children, pretty much living the American dream with the perfect family, will make us happy. The honest truth is that even getting all of those things listed above has nothing to do with happiness. The Oxford English Dictionary defines the word happiness as “the quality or condition of being happy”; This seems easy enough to define, but happiness isn't just about "being happy." If the word were this simple to interpret, many people would not overuse it in different contexts or scenarios. Happiness is different from happy moments. Although the word happiness is debatable, at the end of the day, it's what everyone is trying to achieve. What would happen if you achieved a big goal you set for yourself? Would you feel delighted? For how many seconds, minutes, hours or even days will you feel happy? For most of us, the feeling of euphoria won't last very long. Perhaps the maximum amount of time we will stay happy is a month, or sometimes even longer. It's not like your goal has lost its meaning, but the simple fact that you are happy because the joy of achieving your goal and the feeling of being happy has diminished. Once the feeling fades, the next goal and achievement are in motion. Humans rarely feel completely satisfied with their situation in life and when they feel happy when a certain situation occurs, it doesn't last too long, this is because people are always looking for the next goal to pursue. This...... middle of paper ......work progresses to reach a stage where one can focus on oneself and see the bigger picture, as an adventure and experiences. The only secret to being truly happy has nothing to do with setting goals or achieving them. To get your definition of happiness, firstly, be more optimistic and have a positive outlook on all opportunities and don't look for "happy times" because "happy times" can last for a very long time. Overall, happiness is about appreciating each moment for all it has to offer, and adding personal values and purpose to your life. All of this can make happiness difficult to achieve, but the upside is that happiness can be created in any situation. There are many stories of people who face difficulties in their lives, but still find happiness in their family, faith, and career, and the difficulties don't seem too difficult after all..
