  • Essay / Place Theory and Aboriginal Place Maintenance...

Complete places have been lost and destroyed, resulting in placelessness. An example given in the reading is non-native forces attempting to suppress native hunting, in which they have participated for many years. Indigenous peoples not only had their traditions ripped away from them, but they also had Western culture imposed on them. Indigenous peoples have also been acculturated by changes in the density of land ownership within indigenous communities. Colonial contact also changed the density of local holdings creating new urban cemeteries where Aboriginal burials began to take place as well as schools, shops etc. Not only did they enforce new rules, but they also destroyed many Aboriginal homes and sites, many of which were home to locals.
