Essay / Outlier Analysis: The Story of Success, by Malcolm...
According to Outlier Chapter 9, "Marita's Bargain", Gladwell introduces a public school called KIPP Academy. Students are chosen by drawing lots. Half of the students are African American, the rest are Hispanic. However, at KIPP, their teaching methods are different from other American schools. KIPP students spend almost every second studying. Their students spend fifty to sixty percent more time learning than students in traditional public schools. This is the reason why poor children can also be as smart as rich children in KIPP. According to Gladwell, the reason Asian students are smarter at math is because they don't have as long summer vacations. Asian culture believes that “the path to success is to get up before dawn 260 days a year and that one is hardly going to give their children three consecutive months off in the summer” (260). The school year in Asia therefore lasts almost 243 days. They believe that people have time to learn everything they need to rather than just sitting there and unlearning. However, under the American education system, students have 180 days of summer vacation. Gladwell believes that the length of time students spend in school is the reason why Asian students succeed in math. In my opinion, increasing the number of study hours is the quickest way to open a gap between students studying. In Stand and Deliver, in order to improve students' math skills in a short time, Escalante spends more time teaching students all the time.
