    The Boston Massacre helped widen the divide between American and British settlers in 1770. During this time, many young men were unemployed and were angry because only troops were hired to load the cargoes ships. Urban men gather to cause trouble, such as throwing snowballs with stones at British troops. Then the British shot at them and five American colonists were killed (Jones, 151). The Americans considered them murderers while the troops considered them terrorists. Citizens, like poor whites and farmers, did not like Parliament imposing taxes without representation. For example, the British helped the East India Company sell tea to America. During the Boston Tea Party of 1773, white immigrants disguised themselves as American Indians and boarded British ships in order to dump tea overboard. This further alienated the colonies from the British. Although no one was injured, it was seen as a revolt against British authority. Parliament imposed another law, the Stamp Act of 1765, which required people to spend money to pay by card and buy a stamp with it, plus taxes. Citizens protested the Stamp Act by organizing a secret group called “Sons of Liberty” (Jones, 142). The mob risked their lives to forcibly confiscate the shipment of stamps.
