Essay / The Effect of Media Violence on Our Children - 616
We the people may think that media violence has no effect on our children and youth, but it is a growing pain in our communities and paralyzes people's minds. our own children and the other humans inhabiting this earth. Teenagers living in this society are constantly surrounded by violence, hatred, anger, and strong sexual content, all of which lead to a particular view of how these issues are perceived in their eyes. Media violence desensitizes individuals and also causes a lack of empathy and a disregard for logical thinking that can lead to aggressive behavior. One of the main results of constantly observing media violence is the significant impact of desensitization. Research has shown that "approximately 90% of films, 68% of video games, 60% of television shows, and 15% of music videos contain depictions of violence." Additionally, “children as young as 8 years old spend nearly 7.5 hours with the media every day” (Knorr). These statistics show and prove that adolescents and adults are constantly surrounded by influences that affect your logical thinking. Other studies have shown that all of these influences have had a dramatic effect on how young people and adults deal with certain obstacles they have encountered in their lives, for example: when some experience death , they tend to show no emotion while others are deeply grieving. While others may have no sympathy for those who are beaten, raped, or treated with disrespect, this is all due to the desensitization of their minds brought on by the sinful and neglectful music, videos, and movies that surround communities. A cutting-edge statistic that many people research and use to support the "desensitization" claim is that "many perpetrators are believed to be fans of violent video games like "Doom" and "Counter-Strike." (Horton) Middle of paper is considered the most gruesome stage of aftereffects where some may act after initial exposure. Looking further up in the paper, the example of the Columbine High School shooting is a prime example. This proves what can happen to people after a lot of violence and the horrible things that can happen under the influence of the media. Another good example would be the shooter, Adam Lanza. He was a frequent video gamer who indulged in the series of counterattacks in which eventually led him down the dark path he found himself on.Works CitedN.p. “Columbine High School Massacre.” The Doom Wiki.
