  • Essay / The Importance of Biopsychology - 1063

Before the field of biopsychology even existed, rodent research had been used successfully in many other fields, especially in the field of medicine. Rodents have been the subjects of experiments conducted regarding hormone regulation, vaccine testing, cancer cell research and genetics. The results of these experiments provide new insight into new discoveries and most have proven beneficial in the field of medicine. Testing of new drugs and research on rodents eliminates the need for primates and humans. I feel like we are saving countless human lives by using rodents rather than humans for experimentation. In my opinion, it would be unethical for researchers to perform treatments or drugs not tested on a human before testing them on a lab rat or an alternative. I understand that some people may have concerns about the humane treatment of these rodents, and I agree to some extent, but for the most part, researchers treat their test subjects humanely. Even if an animal must be deceased to study its remains, they still kill it humanely. If rodent research is what brings scientists closer to discovering hidden treasures in the world of neuroscience and psychology, then I believe the time and resources required to pursue this research are well justified. After all, sometimes you have to make sacrifices to
