Essay / Roy Spivey - 758
“Roy Spivey” We all know the constant hype and enthusiasm that celebrities bring whenever they visit a venue. People's personalities tend to change when they encounter a famous or powerful person. They often become insecure and extremely self-critical, because they feel unimportant compared to someone famous. For some people, meeting a famous person can play a very important role in their life. This is exactly what the first-person narrator experiences in Miranda July's 2007 short story "Roy Spivey," and to top it all off, the celebrity even tries to start an affair with the first-person narrator. story, which makes it easier for the reader to identify with the first-person narrator, as we get insight into his thoughts and actions. However, we must keep in mind the possibility that the narrator is unreliable, because we only see things from one point of view. The first-person narrator is a tall but undistinguished middle-class woman who hates her normal, boring life. She describes herself as insecure: “If I had been a more self-confident person, I would not have volunteered to give up my seat on a crowded flight […]” and calls herself “a game of 'child': "That was my reward for being a pushover." .” , which also shows that she is very passive and is easily affected by others. She worries that she is too simple and normal for Roy Spivey: "I looked in the mirror while I was peeing and wondered if I was the simplest person he had ever spoken to"; this fear of being too simple arises because Roy Spivey is a famous person. Roy gives the first person narrator his nanny's private number and this number becomes symbolic for the first person narrator through...... middle of paper...... "Screaming Beatles Fan" ( 1960s) shows how people can act to - completely crazy when I meet or see a famous person. In “Roy Spivey,” the first-person narrator is nowhere near as fanatical about meeting a famous person, but it has a big impact on her life. The text and image show how much impact famous people can have on our lives. From my most central analysis of the characters, themes, and social environment, I discovered that this short story describes feelings, thoughts, and personality changes. people feel when they meet a famous person to be very specific. To emphasize this even more, I put the story into perspective with the image "Screaming Beatles Fan" and the poem "Elvis Kissed Me", which had some slight differences from "Roy Spivey", but it made change themes and personality when meeting a famous person even more distinct.
