How would you feel if everyone around you was slowly dying with no way to stop anyone else from dying? This is what everyone faces in Fever 1793, a book by Laurie Halse Anderson, which teaches a lesson about following your heart and never giving up. In my opinion, it was a very good novel; because it was both informative and suspenseful while allowing the reader to get a first-person "view" of Yellow Fever-infected Philadelphia. The story focuses on the main character, Mattie, who is stunned by the shocking number of deaths. When her mother also falls ill, she finally realizes that she must seek refuge elsewhere. Here, the problems keep piling up, disaster after disaster, until she has no choice but to return to Philadelphia…. Read the rest of the story to find out what happens to Mattie! Matilda (Mattie) seems really credible to me. I think if she were a real person, she would be my friend. I admire her for her courage, her loyalty and the calm way she handles complicated situations.
