  • Essay / Trapped in Geometry: The Life of Pi - 800

Life is a repetitive cycle of endless trials and unexpected changes. Whether the changes are a test of faith, belief, or courage, the trials never end. This is very similar to the infinite series of numbers that make up Pi. Faith, on the other hand, is the circumference that has guided Pi along the circle of trials. The story The Life of Pi, written by Yann Martel, tells how the influence of geometry helped a boy maintain his faith in God and survive the incredible shipwreck that shaped his life forever. Piscine Molitor Patel, also known as Pi Patel, was the main character of the story. Pi had lived a life of faith. Nevertheless, the boy never stopped loving God. Mr. Francis Adirubasamy once mentioned the toy train in the botanical garden: “A train still runs on Sundays for the amusement of children. But it ran twice an hour every day… The toy train had two stops: Roseville and Zootown. Once upon a time there was a zoo at the Pondicherry Botanical Garden (Martel XI).” Pi's faith in God is like the toy train. It is a cycle that must be tested again and again. No matter how busy Pi's life was, he never forgot to slip a prayer into his days. No matter what changes Pi makes in his life, he will always come back to God. No matter how many stops the train makes, it will always stay on its track. No matter if the train was broken or no longer working, it could always be repaired and continue to run on the railway. Pi had been trapped by the figures of geometry during his journey and throughout his faith. Pi once noted: “To be a castaway is to be a point perpetually in the center of a circle. Even though things seem to change, the geometry never changes. Your look is a... middle of paper...... I hate my nickname, the way this number drags on. It's important in life to wrap things up well. Only then will you be able to let go (Martel 285).” The period of “3.14” had concluded Pi before a series of endless numbers unleashed itself in an unexpected direction. This is the reason why the period is a very important element that constitutes Pi. The geometric reference played a major role in shaping Pi's life. This had guided Pi Patel throughout his faith in God. It had also created a sense of harmony in the scheme of things and made Pi's journey what it had become. The geometry trapping trials had shaped Pi's future immensely. Pi's life had taught a lesson about the need to maintain infinite faith, regardless of the unexpected turns that occurred in the endless series of the number "3.14..." Works cited Martel, Yann.
