Essay / Technological Advances in Communication - 1276
"In the beginning was the word." Even the Bible seems to date the beginnings of man from the first discovery of communication: speech. Follow me, if you wish, on a guided tour of the progress man has made in “spreading the word.” We will travel first, about five million years ago, to the very beginning of humanity. While traveling through arid deserts, wooded forests or grassy plains, we stop at the caveman. He doesn't know it yet, but he's about to make history. After spotting a herd of deer, instead of making movements with its arms or gestures with its head, it emits a series of sounds, beyond the normal grunts or clicks. Although they may seem meaningless to us, these sounds have just been recognized by his fellow hunters, and they too are able to spot the herd. It is these same sounds that will give birth to words, which will trigger a revolution in communication. They add more words and soon this tribe develops its own form of communication. Centuries pass and now this tribe has developed these words into a true language. Thanks to these words, this tribe has grown and is now prospering. They are more productive and able to survive better than ever. They are no longer nomads, but now live in small villages. Even though they have their own language, their way of communicating is not yet complete. All major events had to be memorized, because there was no way to record them. And all messages had to be conveyed verbally. So people began looking for other means of communication, which led them to the next greatest discovery in history: symbols and the written alphabet. Travel with me back in time to the 33rd century BC. The prehistoric tribe we followed has now become a civilian tribe. ...... middle of paper ...... this device actually makes it appear as if you are standing right next to the projected person. You can meet and talk with the person, eye to eye. And the whole body is projected, not just from the neck upwards. Teleportec already markets its teleporters for $70,000, installation included. Who knows where this could lead us. The current intended use is to hold meetings with them, but think about how many other things we could do with them. You could meet and talk with people from all over the world, learn about different cultures, and become more informed about what's happening in the world around you, not just in your own backyard. Imagine the possibilities. Our technology has progressed so far. Who would have thought it all started with just one word. A simple word spoken. Who knows where the teleport will take us. The possibilities are endless.
