Essay / Aspects of Intercultural Communication in Capital by...
In this work, I will describe and analyze some aspects of intercultural communication in John Lanchester's novel Capital. First of all, I chose this particular book because in it we can see a range of different cultures, nationalities and individuals living in one city and constantly being in contact with each other. Moreover, in this novel we can see how different people struggle with the difficulties that living in a foreign society inevitably brings – from the simple language barrier to fundamental differences in world perception. Finally, I like psychology, so it was interesting for me to follow the characters evolve and interact with each other, doing things that are not natural to them, changing depending on the circumstances. First of all, I think it is worth highlighting a few facts from the author's biography. John Lanchester is from Hamburg, Germany. He was born in 1962 and grew up in Hong Kong, but studied in England at Gresham's School and St John's College. He was a journalist and food critic, but today he is a very famous novelist. He regularly contributes to The New Yorker, Granta, The Daily Telegraph and The Observer. So we can see that Lanchester is a man who has traveled widely, who has seen many different cultures, and whose interests vary greatly. The book tells us about the lives of the residents of a fictional south London street and the people with whom they communicate. with. The action lasts for approximately a year during which settled citizens interact with those from abroad who try to fight for their place in British society. Characters in the book include a Polish builder, a Hungarian woman who takes a job as a nanny. despite a degree...... middle of paper......o understands, high up on the London Eye, trying to impress a date. He is simply fascinated by the city: “large and low in the middle, with a higher edge in both directions, like a gigantic saucer”. He is finally in love. ConclusionCapital by John Lanchester is undoubtedly a great read. It not only gives the reader an in-depth analysis of a modern megacity with residents of different tastes, cultures, motivations and habits, but also offers great laughs and moments of genuine sadness. The book itself is just as diverse and unpredictable as life in a huge modern city. Although intercultural communication is not the only issue raised by the author, it is the one that captures the reader's attention the most and embodies all the other aspects discussed. of Lanchester. I really enjoyed reading the book. It was both a pleasure and a thought process.
