Tobias Wolff's short story, "In the Garden of North American Martyrs," is a naturalistic drama because the protagonist, Mary, has made herself so enjoyable as possible and rarely expresses his own opinions, following an orthodox way of life. Mary then improvises an intense lecture and chooses to follow her own path in her own teachings, when she realizes that she is called for a fake job interview. Mary is then rewarded by finding her own voice and self-confidence when she chooses to rebuke the cold harshness that Louise and the entire search committee had brought upon her. Mary is presented as impassive; conforming to what is accepted by fellow administrators and unable to express his own opinions. While Mary saw a “brilliant and original” professor lose his job for expressing his own ideas, Mary confines herself to traditional teaching methods. She strives to be accepted by everyone and avoids any situation or idea that could present her as scandalous or manifest a protest against common beliefs.
