Agriculture is a very important sector in the Cameroonian economy, because it employs 70% of its workforce, represents 42% of the gross domestic product and 30% of exports. income (Encyclopedia of Nations » Africa » Cameroon). The country has rich soils and a climate conducive to the production of diversified products. Between 1990 and 2005, agricultural yields improved significantly, leading to an increase in agricultural gross domestic product of 4%. Its agricultural products include coffee, cocoa beans, oilseeds, banana, cassava, cereals, livestock and timber. The emphasis here is on the breeding of Cameroonian agricultural production; and poultry will be the value chain of interest. According to a 2004 study 198, 614 households were involved in poultry farming, including chickens and in 2005, an estimated 33.6 million chickens were produced. Despite these high figures, production was not sufficient to satisfy local demand and to this end, we note that from 1999 to 2004, there were large imports of frozen chicken from the European Union. This was done by explaining that imported chicken was cheaper and affordable and was able to satisfy the high demand, which local production could not satisfy (source: Statistics Department of the General Directorate of Customs – Douala, Cameroon ). One such area is the maize value chain, which is an exclusive component of it, as it helps feed poultry. There are fears that poultry production will face a drastic decline in Cameroon, due to the very low production of maize, used to feed chickens. According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MINADER), Cameroon's annual production was 3.6 million heads, according to 2009 results, and is expected to triple by 2015.
