Essay / Before I Fall by Lauren Oliver - 740
The book “Before I Fall” is a book full of shifting tones. Sammy (the main character) has a significant tonal shift. The tone the author gives to Sammy changes; From the beginning to the end of the story, there is a big difference in tone. The tone set helps create a more detailed perspective of the character. At the beginning of the book, the author described Sammy as a very rude and ungrateful teenager. The tone given by the author to Sammy was that of a very rude and popular girl. She was mean to everyone, she didn't care what words came out of her mouth, respectful or disrespectful. She was mean to Kent and thought he was creepy, she dated a popular guy, she went to crazy parties, and she had popular friends. She took things for granted and didn't realize that the little things she did or said greatly affected others. “We all turn around. Juliet Sykes, or Psycho”, (Oliver, 39 years old). Sam doesn't know how she's affecting Juliette by calling her any name. Sammy doesn't care how Juliet feels. She thinks she's better than everyone. “The fact is we can do things like this. Do you know why? Because we are popular. And we're popular because we can do anything. »(Oliver, 17-18 years old). In this quote, Sammy is talking about what it means to be popular. I think when Sammy talks about popularity she is very indifferent and also disrespectful to others who may not be able to afford certain items or types of things. Or even people who may not be able to have the best. The tone is set when she explains her thoughts on topics. The way she explains whatever the topic is, she expresses her opinion, which is disrespectful. I think the author set the tone this way so that it would be in the middle of the article...I think the author chose to change the tone to be able to show readers that people can change. Also to show readers the effect that simple things or situations can have on others. Throughout the story, the tone set by the author will create the ending. This means that the tone that was given to Sammy at the beginning of the book, where Sammy is selfish and disrespectful to others, helps shape how the end of the story will play out. Sammy affected how Juliet felt; At the end of the book and throughout the story, Juliette references suicide due to the way she was treated in relation to Sammy at the beginning and before the event, but this contributes to Sammy's change in tone . She sees what his personality was like and she changes it. Works Cited Oliver, Lauren. before falling. 1st ed. New York: HarperCollinsPublishers, 2010. 0-468. Print.
