Essay / Gender Bias and Sexism in Writers - 1046
Gender bias is what our society has been trying to avoid for decades. However, in many cases, it plays a huge role in the outcomes of creative outlets. Writing is usually a very personal reflection on the values, views and opinions of others. What role does gender play on a person's writing style? Could an entire book of poetry revolve around whether the author is male or female? Sexism is a problem that has plagued our world for hundreds of years. The idea that women belong in the kitchen and men belong under the hood of a car is widespread in all societies. If people believe such drastic stereotypes, would it make sense to say that a person's gender plays no role in how they write? Poet Lisa Robertson is a good example of the influence of gender in poetry. Writers often have a beautiful way of saying the things they are most passionate about and Robertson is a strong, independent woman who is not afraid to make her opinions known. In almost every interview with Robertson, she is asked more about her feminist work than her writing. Most people who talk to her automatically assume that her personal opinions have a direct impact on her work, and she proves them right in conversation with fellow poet Brecken Hancock. Robertson states: ““[Philosophical] discourse…contains some of our most intensely sexist and authority-based constraints. As a woman without authority in the field, it scared me to admit that I wanted to write these essays, in heavy and dignified houses, I feel a violent dismay. It becomes more and more difficult to be a woman in such a house. A man wouldn't write about women's issues the same way she would, they have been trained to see things differently. ...... middle of paper ...... “I just knew. Men and women have a certain way of speaking. “Gender affects our daily lives even if society does not want to admit it. Creatively, this harms the outcome of individual works. Whether it’s a painting, a journal, a piece of music, or, above all, poetry, genre matters. Lisa Robertson is a women's rights activist, she has worked for years on issues of women's empowerment and equality, each of her writings shows this. This is also true for other poets like Anne Waldman, Carol Ann Duffy, and Maya Angelou who once said, “How important it is for us to recognize and celebrate our heroes and our females!” Genre-based writing at its best. men-and-women-are-different-very-different/
