Throughout this article, I will examine whether health care reform has been effective and name some of the positive and negative outcomes. Additionally, I will examine the impact of health care reform on community health. Discussion of the effect of health care reform on the economy in Ohio will conclude this article. Overview of Health Care Reform The United States (US) has a health care system that is very different from any other health care system in the world (Nies & McEwen, 2015). It is often recognized as one of the systems with the most recent technological inventions, but at the same time it is often criticized for being too expensive (Nies and McEwen, 2015). In 2010, President Obama signed the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA) (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, n.d.). This plan was implemented with the goal of making preventative care more affordable and accessible to all uninsured Americans (U.S. Department of Health). Health and Social Services, nd). Under the law, the new Patient Bill of Rights gives consumers the power to be responsible for their health care choices. (US Department of Health and Human Services, nd). Health Care Reform in My State The goal of the ACA in America, as well as in Ohio, is to make health care easily accessible, more affordable, and to improve the quality of health care for consumers (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 2015). By being able to purchase health insurance through Marketplace, Ohio residents can choose coverage at a cost equivalent to paper (Kaspen, Gorman & Miller, 2013) Encouraging healthy lifestyle choices, such as quitting smoking, healthy eating, weight management, blood pressure and cholesterol management, people are healthier and have a reduced risk of developing chronic diseases, thereby reducing the need for medical care and money spent on it (Kaspen, Gorman & Miller, 2013).In conclusion, health reform begins with prevention. By focusing on improving people's lifestyle and quality of life, their overall well-being will improve. With all the opportunities provided by the ACA to improve the health of the nation by supporting physical fitness, discouraging tobacco use, encouraging healthy eating and weight management, making health insurance affordable, and implementing preventive services, this could lead to a huge improvement not only in people's health but also in the economy.
