  • Essay / A Career in Music Education - 629

My life goal is to earn a degree in music education with a concentration in voice and choir, become a church accompanist, and own a music academy. This conclusion was not easy to obtain. For several years, I struggled aimlessly to realize the hopes and dreams of a vague future. My high school years and now my first year of college have served to clarify my mission and goals in life. After finishing my ninth year of music studies, I wanted to change careers. Attending an hour-long lesson at the age of twelve brought little excitement to my week. My music teacher, because she knew where such obstacles led, strongly encouraged me to audition for an accompaniment opportunity at my church. Passing the audition and receiving the job revitalized me and an inexplicably constant amount of favors began to appear. A few weeks later, I opened my own private studio at age 13 with two students. In 2010, I was named “Most Dedicated Young Piano Teacher” by my teacher’s teaching association. After practicing with the choir and teaching my first 30-minute lesson, I knew I wanted to teach and direct for the rest of my life. After finalizing my career goal, I noticed that I was getting absorbed in the routine of life. As Homecoming activities approached, my role as Student Council President expanded to include more meetings and late nights, preparing for a fun-filled week for the entire student body. My advanced classes seemed to intensify during this time and my students' fall piano recitals were approaching. Biweekly meetings with my Girl Scout troop and looming Yearbook deadlines were cluttering my calendar. On September 14, 2012, however, I was forced to slow down and analyze the meaning of my life as I was involved...... middle of paper ...... ranting. Now I know that every second we are given is a blessing and should be used to glorify the name of God. The remaining scars from the accident remind me daily of God's unfailing grace and mercy and I am determined to use them. as a tool for my ministry aimed at equipping students musically, but also spiritually.
