School funding is a recurring problem in the modern era. Debates ranging from giving more money to schools to eliminating the existing system and reforming a new idea have plagued the world over the years. “The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, signed in 2009, provided more than $100 billion in education aid to offset budget cuts. » (School financing). Later, "Congress provided an additional $10 billion in 2010 to prevent mass teacher layoffs (Education Week, Total Recovery Act)" (School Funding). These figures are just a sample of the difficulties associated with financing schools, which cost an enormous amount of money to keep afloat. “There are many ways to fund schools, which vary from state to state and even from school to school. Income taxes, corporate taxes, sales taxes and other fees provide 48 percent of elementary and secondary school funds. 44 percent of local districts get money from local property taxes. The federal government accounts for about 8 percent of state education budgets. These funds are distributed on a per-student basis and categorically to ensure sufficient resources for each special program or facility” (School Funding). These funds play a huge role in the education of every student, whether positive or negative. The three main areas that need to be addressed in the school budget are extracurricular funding, building and equipment maintenance, and last but not least staff funding. “One way to better understand school funding is to view it in terms of adequacy and equity. of resources. Adequacy is based on the principle that states should provide sufficient funding so that all students are able to meet academic expectations” (School Funding). For the most part, schools budget the money they get to the best of their ability, but they need more money to meet these basic and important needs. Overall, the School Budget Committee needs to start at the bottom and fund what is needed to get schools back on their feet. These easy-to-solve issues are a key part of school funding and need to be addressed appropriately.
