Essay / Overcoming Racism in Remember The Titans
Remember the Titans is a film that shows the racist conflict at a school called TC Williams in Alexandria, Virginia in 1971. The film follows the football team, the Titans. Gerry and Julius, two very important boys in the film, were on the football team. They helped the city eliminate racism. Alexandria, Virginia was a very racist town. There were no mixed schools, buses or soccer teams. Early in the film, a black teenager was shot and killed by a white shopkeeper. Things like this were stopped after a high school named TC Williams became a mixed-color school and started a mixed-color football team. The Titans were not happy when they learned that colored boys would be joining their football team. The team captain, Gerry, was particularly not happy about this. However, Gerry began to change when the team went to a football camp. Say no to plagiarism. Get a tailor-made essay on “Why Violent Video Games Should Not Be Banned”? Get the original essay. Coach Boon made the team learn everything about his teammates. He put them through rigorous training. His teammates and his new black coach began to grow with him and helped him understand the difficulties and bad sides of racism. Gerry began treating his teammates of color (and people of color in general) like normal people – exactly as he should. It helped me understand Gerry's character as the kind and loving person he is. As an example of the change we saw in Gerry was when Gerry and his teammate of color, Julius, helped break up a fight between white boys and colored boys. Yakin shows that Gerry and Julius are not much different in this scene with a wide shot of the boys mirroring each other's body language after the fight ends. Julius joined the football team because of his love for football. When they went to football camp, Julius constantly bickered with Gerry. As the football camp continued, Gerry and Julius became friends. They all did it. Julius played an important role in how they changed the city by helping them win all their football games which united the city. Julius was very determined to win every game they played and be perfect. He helped bring the team together to be the best team it could be. This shows that Julius is a kind and loving person who will not stop helping others become better until they are better. He helped Gerry become an open-minded and loving friend. He’s my brother.” After watching this movie, I saw the kind and loving boys that Gerry and Julius became after helping to overcome racism. The hard work they put in to go to all these games and show people that people of color aren't bad people shows how nice they are. It was a great movie and I enjoyed watching it.
