Each year in the month of Ramadan, all Muslims fast from dawn (fajr) until sunset (maghrib), abstaining from food, drink (including water), and sexual relations. This is the month when Allah first revealed the Quran to our beloved Prophet Muhammad. In that month, the entire Quran was sent to the first heaven from Lauhi Mahfouz. During the fast, Muslims are also required to refrain from smoking and refrain from other amenities such as chewing gum. Fasting is essentially an attempt to draw closer to Allah and increase one's piety. One of the distant goals of fasting is to sympathize with less fortunate members of society who do not always have access to food and drink. One should also try to avoid swearing and having bad thoughts, with the aim of controlling the tongue and temper during the fasting hours. Fasting also carries important spiritual significance. It teaches the principle of love: because when we fast, it is out of deep love for God and to learn restraint (Alrayes, 2014). During our interview with Mohammed, we discussed the different aspects of Sawm and how it is practiced. Mohammed moved to the United States at the age of 7, an age at which a Muslim is not required to fast, because in order to fast, a Muslim must reach puberty. In doing so, Mohammed was to begin his
