  • Essay / Feminine self-affirmation in Kate's hour-long story...

There were more clues to uncover than expected, but once I realized Kate Chopin's writing style , I enjoyed reading each sentence to discover the hidden meaning. Xuding Wang's essay was helpful for me to see what I couldn't see for myself. The point that stood out to me from Wang's essay was the critic Berkové, which, as I mentioned earlier in this analysis, seemed to be the same blockade against women that Chopin spoke of in 1894. To know the character in the story, you need to know the writer. . Kate Chopin was called a rebel in her time. Her stories were a call to action by women and going as far as Berkove did and calling these ideas delusional makes him seem outdated and overbearing. I can only experience what I do in life. I will never understand the challenges people of other races, cultures, or genders face. Reading the original story and another woman's discussion about it was very informative. There are emotions described that I never thought of. With a critic like Berkove using language as he did in his critique of Chopin's work, it makes me curious about how far our society has come. Racism is still alive and well, religious persecution and in this story, sexism. It seems to me that the world has never really changed and will continue to bring the same problems as today.
