As adolescents move away from the restrictive influence of their parents, they begin to establish their own identity through decisions. However, the development of self-identification is often hindered by societal institutions such as the justice system, religion, and the media. Anthony Burgess's A Clockwork Orange shows how free will is removed when Alex, the main protagonist, undergoes Ludovico's technique, religious and social lectures are forced to be attributed to media-influenced societal norms. Similar to the treatment of criminals in our society, these manipulation techniques are used to instill pain when Alex desires violence or music, as a means of finding salvation; although fear, police, indelible advertisements, and the law are meant to be used to mitigate crime, they ultimately suppress free will through coercive techniques. Therefore, American citizens do not have the right to choose, because even the means of establishing oneself are intertwined and repressed by societal institutions. When citizens envision prison, they envision solitude, protection, and security; but, beyond these protective walls, criminals and society are subject to illegal constraints implemented by the dictatorial justice system as a means of suppressing free will. The justice system is influenced and mainly dominated by corrupt tycoons and politicians; the development of power between these two institutions is established through money and strong relationships. In exchange for money, government officials will collude and implement the constraints placed on society and heinous criminals, while they are held captive.
