  • Essay / Participation in the community development process

Research question 1: Do citizens really know the importance of participating in community development processes? Table 2 is a presentation of the results of the responses to the statements of elements 1 to 4, intended to obtain the level of awareness of citizens. Considering the responses to these statements, it was observed that although a portion of the respondents are aware of the importance of community members' participation in the community development process, a larger percentage (59% precisely) remains very ignorant of the importance of community members' participation in the community development process. their role in the process. Secondly, the percentage distribution means that 90.8% of the respondents agree with the statement in point 2. In the third case, while 51.9% agree that participation is a practice that develops the abilities of community members to improve their own lives and that of their community. , 4.6% disagreed and up to 43.5% were undecided in their response to the statement. It is evident that those who disagree with the statement as well as those who are not sure what to think about it constitute 48.1% of the community members. A consideration of this high percentage in relation to research findings that participation is a practice that develops individuals' abilities to improve their own lives; that it is an instrument of improvement capable of undermining the related vices of ignorance, indolence and class conflict; and that the direct participation of local people in local affairs is an essential means of public education, without which democracy and individual freedom cannot function (Nelson and Wright, 1995; Timothy, 2000; Tosun and Timothy, 2003) is indicative of a high level of participation. ignorance among community members of the importance of community participation...... middle of document ......existing.
