Filled with pale green shoots and newborn animals, the majority of people associate spring with the arrival of summer. However, the narrator remains optimistic. She does not see spring as a sign of summer, but rather as a continuation of winter. She can never allow herself to relax because the fear of a late winter frost scares her too much. This becomes quite a paradox. Because while the seasons are a metaphor representing the narrator's emotional state and her desire to have an open, healthy relationship with another person with whom she feels safe, she has the ability to trap herself in eternal winter.
