  • Essay / Discrimination in Of Mice and Men - 873

Discrimination is a problem that afflicts those with vulnerable qualities. There are many examples of discrimination in the novel Of Mice and Men. The characters face a lot of discrimination, especially in terms of race, age, gender and disability. Crooks, the black male of the stables, is the victim of racial discrimination. Candy, the old swamp girl, is the victim of age discrimination. The victim of gender discrimination is Curley's wife because she is a woman. The victims' lives are hard because of the ordeals they have to go through. Finally, Lennie is mentally disabled and so he discriminated because of that. Racial discrimination has existed for a long time, judging people by the color of their skin. Crooks is affected by this because he is black. At that time, black people were considered inferior to white people. Racial discrimination only affects Crooks' life in a negative way. He suffers from loneliness because of the color of his skin. His lack of company is driving him crazy. It's only when Lennie enters his room that he feels less alone. He talked about his loneliness using a hypothetical scenario in which George would leave Lennie. Crooks responds to this discrimination by staying in his barn and isolating himself. He doesn't want anyone there, but deep down he wants it for company. He is not wanted in the bunk house or to play cards with the others because he is black. This affected the story by letting people walk all over him, letting them think they can do whatever they want, and ultimately making people believe they have a lot of power when in reality this is not the case. Age discrimination affects older and younger people. This leads people to think that they can just walk over the person being discriminated against... middle of paper...... brought about his own demise by killing Curley's wife and making George shoot her . Overall, discrimination is a horrible thing. . It's like an STD, it can be passed from parent to child, or someone can become infected if you're not careful. Discrimination is also like the plague. It sweeps through large numbers of people, infecting most, and most do not survive. Even though today much of the discrimination has disappeared, just like the plague, it is still there. Unfortunately for some people, they have to face discrimination from others. Whether it is discrimination based on race, age, disability or gender. Discrimination has many harmful effects on a person's life. In Of Mice and Men, the unlucky victims of discrimination also suffer the same effects. They allow people to control and walk on them. Discrimination is like a fire... It hurts.
