Compstat attempts to reduce crime by making police officers accountable (Godown, 2009). The information police get from Compstat could be used to increase the amount of resources police give to these areas. If areas are experiencing a high number of thefts, community police officers can begin to interview and gain the trust of residents and find the people involved. Pulling the levers of policing is a deterrence strategy driven by research that a small number of criminals commit most crimes (Garside, 2004), and punishment and deterrence should focus on them. This strategy can be used as part of repression measures or specific targets of groups of people and/or gangs.
