Usually, ethnic, cultural and religious differences lead to some kinds of misunderstandings between people from different societies. People are usually judged based on their behavior in public spaces, which may be a result of their culture, education, or social class. An article titled "The Arab World" (1996), written by Edward T. Hall, an American anthropologist and writer, discusses cultural misconceptions between Americans and Arabs. The article highlights many social behaviors adopted by Arab individuals that seem strange and sometimes surprising and embarrassing to Americans and Westerners. Additionally, Hall includes examples of many social behaviors that he believes are the theme of Arab culture, as well as some personal experiences that led him to conclude that it is really difficult for Europeans and Americans to understand the Arabs. Despite the presence of some positive points, the article is heavily biased and prejudiced against Arabs, and it is clearly noted that the author has a misconception about Arab and Middle Eastern culture. To begin with, while some of the points made in his article are valid, most of the author's thoughts are hypotheses that are not supported by any evidence, research, statistics, or even individual studies. Hall relies heavily on his limited personal experience with some Arab peoples, or so he thinks. He stereotypes these experiences about all Arabs and concludes that Arabs are very different from Americans and difficult to understand easily. Hall claims that the concept of privacy is not really present in Arab thought. In the "Arab World", Edward T. Hall explains his point of view by mentioning a personal experience where he became angry while sitting in an empty place...... in the middle of a paper. .....trusion, which is more is probably the case in most civilized societies. Stopping dangerous actions on the streets is a civilized behavior that is not only adopted by Arabs, but by every individual who cares about the safety of people in their society. All things considered, I think the author formed a negative opinion, far from reality, about Arabs in his mind through the events he experienced with some Arabs. It is completely unfair to judge approximately 350 million Arabs occupying 22 countries spread across 2 continents based on a few personal experiences. Arab culture β like any other culture β has negative sides as well as many positive sides. People should stop prejudging others and start learning to think deeply before passing judgment.
