  • Essay / Shawshank - 1905

ShawshankThe film, Shawshank Redemption, tells the story of two men, Andy Dufrane and Red Abbott, who spent most of their lives together in prison, going through the ups and downs of life in prison. Andy, who was once a vice president of a bank, was in prison for the murder of his wife and her lover, when he caught them in bed together; he gave life in prison. While Red, also convicted of murder, was sentenced to life but with a chance of parole. The two became close because they were both highly educated men and shared the same interests. After five years of doing laundry, the warden thought it would be in the best interests of the prison to use a man as educated as Andy in the library. So they moved Andy from the laundry room to the library to assist librarian Brook Hadlen. After being Brook's assistant for a while, Brook was paroled and Andy took over the library job and paid taxes for all the guards and the director. There wasn't much in the library, so Andy asked the director if it would be okay if he started sending a letter and a week to the Senate for funding, and the director agreed. He would send a letter a week until, finally, six years later, he received a response. He went down to the director's office and saw piles of old books, magazines and records sent from libraries that no longer used them and a check for two hundred dollars for the construction of a new library. . Andy was excited about all these things and starts going through all the different records and stuff. He finds a record he likes and has the courage to play it on the record player. A restroom officer asks Andy if he could also hear that, but Andy ignores him and uses the key to lock the restroom, then locks the manager's office so he doesn't disappear. As the music continues, Andy decides that he shouldn't be the only one enjoying the music but should allow everyone to hear it. He then walks over to the switchboard and turns it on so everyone can hear it. As the music plays through the speakers, all the prisoners and guards turn in awe to the speaker and simply listen. Two Italian ladies were singing the beautiful music of Italian opera and their voices soared, as could be heard from the sky. It was... middle of paper ... the principal wouldn't have allowed it. The purpose of this scene is to communicate to the audience how music affects people and what it communicates. Music is one of the major forms of communication, it changes people's attitudes because it touches souls above all. Music helps people get through the good and bad times in their lives. Andy realizes that there is much more than prison: "There are places in the world that are not made of stone, there is something inside that they cannot access, that they can touch. ยป What Andy is talking about is hope. Hope is what keeps everyone alive and going day after day. Hope can bring the most happiness in life. This is what the prisoners thought of when they heard the music in the courtyard. They weren't two Italian opera singers, they were the voice of reason reminding them that everything will be okay and good will come to everyone. None of the inmates knew what the Italian singers were singing, but they listened because it..
