  • Essay / The Influence of Celebrity Culture - 1781

Nowadays, we live in a society obsessed with celebrity culture. This is not a new addiction, however; Our society's fascination with celebrity culture has existed for decades. Over the years, we've seen the fandom come in various shapes, forms, and sizes. From '60s groupies to newer digital devotees, all fans have in common the pedestal on which they placed their favorite celebrity. Some people would say that fans are not only the most important part of a celebrity's life, but that fans are the epitome of their success. Fans admire them, follow their every move: physical or electronic, and buy anything that could make them look more like the desired celebrity. Many experts even believe that fan clubs often resemble religions. One can easily see the similarities between fans and a religious sect; from worship to organizing conventions and events recruiting new followers. To some, it may even seem like a disorder, and Dr. Lynn McCutcheon, after her intense research, was the first to coin the term: (CWS) celebrity worship syndrome. According to Psychology Today, CWS can be described as a mental disorder in which an individual becomes completely obsessed with the details of a celebrity's personal life (Griffiths). A celebrity, as defined by Mark Griffiths, can be anyone in the "public eye", including politicians, authors and journalists, but according to Dr McCutcheon's research it is more likely to be a person from the world of television. , films and/or pop music. Continuing Justin Bieber's advertising campaign, this article examines the special relationship between consumers and divine celebrities. It's a showcase......in the middle of paper......in a society where consuming has become a fundamental necessity in the same way as feeding, clothing or housing. We have to shop to survive, but do we really need celebrities to tell us what to buy? Celebrities can make mistakes too, after all, they're humans too, right? Celebrities have more influence than religion and it is obvious that celebrities have more followers than religion itself. We might think that celebrities are worshiped like God, but in reality, celebrities might just be greater than the Almighty himself. “Christianity will disappear. It will disappear and shrink. I don't need to discuss this; I am right and I will be right. We are more popular than Jesus now; I don't know which will come first: rock'n'roll or Christianity. Jesus was fine but his disciples were thick and ordinary. It's them who distort it who ruin everything for me" - John Lennon.
